Printer Friendly View "Inclusion" and Special EducationAccording to special education law, children with special needs are entitled to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE). This was originally referred to as "mainstreaming" and is now sometimes called "integration" or "inclusion." This approach includes children with special needs in the regular classroom and gives them access to the general curriculum as much as possible. LRE applies to non-classroom activities and events such as such as extracurricular activities, recess, meal times, transportation, dances and spectator sports.
